Colin Benders is an electrified artistic spirit, a mind trained to compose as quickly as he creates. Over the past seven years, Benders has perfected an instrument capable of fully channeling his unique talent in directing a multitude of sound elements: the modular synthesizer. From polyphonic harmony-based tracks to the vast expanse of techno, Benders lives to create music in the present moment, thus freeing himself from the typical rigid cycle of recording and live performance in which many musicians find themselves trapped. Even before touching his first modular synthesizer module, Benders had already taken the possibilities of live music to their extremes. His Kyteman Orchestra has received numerous awards, thanks to a whirlwind of ideas that came to life in unprecedented ways through live performance.

With so many elements at play — a vast ensemble and his constant thirst for innovation — it became increasingly evident that the composer from Utrecht needed a new soundtrack, a form of expression that would not force him to retrace territories already explored and documented. Immersing himself in the world of modular synthesizers gave Benders the freedom to directly transform emotions into sound, down to the smallest details. The writing and execution of premeditated compositions are now a thing of the past: with his new instrument, Benders has chosen to improvise through live streaming and online video broadcasts. His talent for creating fully formed musical ideas in real time with a wide range of modules quickly attracted attention. In recent years, Benders has been invited to perform at prestigious festivals and clubs, including Awakenings, Dekmantel, Le Guess Who? , Amsterdam Dance Event and Berghain.

Just like in his streaming broadcasts, each performance has become a unique and unrepeatable experience. For now, he is content to interact and explore his music day by day, expressing it as a sincere language rather than as a finished product. And, almost paradoxically, the modular synthesizer allows Colin Benders to be both an engineer and an explorer of an instinctive and highly contagious process.
